Tragic Incident at Sea
The Neelkamal boat collided with a Navy speedboat while traveling from Gateway of India to Elephanta. Both vessels sank in the accident, claiming 15 lives. However, rescue teams managed to save 100 passengers.
Arif Bamne Heroic Efforts
Arif, a boatmaster on the Purva, acted swiftly during the disaster. His boat was nearby when the accident happened. Without hesitation, he and his team jumped into the sea. They saved 35 passengers using a pilot boat and transferred them safely to the Vasudev ferry.
One of the most heartwarming rescues was of an unconscious three-and-a-half-year-old child. Arif’s actions proved crucial during the crisis.

Uddhav Thackeray’s party recognized Arif and his team members—Kifayat Mulla, Tapas Kar, and Nandu Jana—for their bravery. Each received a cash reward as a token of appreciation.
The incident has brought widespread recognition to Arif’s heroic actions. During the ceremony, Uddhav Thackeray personally commended his efforts, calling him an inspiration.
