Atishi to Take Oath as Delhi Chief Minister on Saturday

Atishi, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will be sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister on Saturday. This comes after Arvind Kejriwal stepped down from the post on Tuesday.

Kejriwal’s resignation has paved the way for her to lead the capital, bringing fresh leadership to the AAP government. Her swearing-in marks a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape.

A New Beginning for Delhi

Atishi’s appointment as Chief Minister is seen as a move to continue AAP’s governance, focusing on development and public welfare. She has played a key role in shaping education policies in Delhi and is expected to bring a fresh perspective to leadership.

With Atishi at the helm, the city is poised for a new chapter in its political journey.

Early Life and Education

Atishi, born on June 8, 1981, comes from an academic background in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, were professors at Delhi University. At birth, she was given the middle name “Marlena,” a blend of Marx and Lenin, reflecting her family’s ideological beliefs. However, in 2018, she chose to publicly go by just “Atishi” to emphasize her work over her background.

Atishi attended Springdales School in Delhi before pursuing a History degree from St. Stephen’s College in 2001. Her academic journey continued at Oxford University, where she completed her master’s in History in 2003 on a Chevening scholarship. She furthered her studies at Magdalen College as a Rhodes scholar in 2005.

Political Involvement

Atishi joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in January 2013, where she quickly became an influential figure in policy-making. Her involvement in social issues grew through her work in the Anti-Corruption Movement. In 2015, she supported AAP leader Alok Agarwal during the Jal Satyagraha protests in Madhya Pradesh, where they fought legal battles for water rights.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Atishi was appointed the AAP in-charge for East Delhi. Although she contested the elections, she finished third, losing to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir by a margin of 4.77 lakh votes.

Political Rise in Delhi

The 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections marked a significant turning point in Atishi’s career. Running from the Kalkaji constituency, she won by 11,422 votes, defeating BJP’s Dharambir Singh. This victory catapulted her into a leading role within the Delhi government.

Cabinet Role and Legislative Influence

After her win, Atishi was appointed as a Cabinet Minister in Delhi, following the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyender Jain. During the 2022-23 period, she chaired the Public Accounts Committee and actively participated in committees related to Women and Child Welfare, Minority Welfare, and Education.
