Bhutan Honors Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh
Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck attended the funeral of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Saturday. A day earlier, the King led the nation in offering prayers at a Buddhist monastery in Thimphu.
Nationwide Tributes in Bhutan
Prayer ceremonies for Dr. Singh were held in all 20 districts of Bhutan. The Bhutanese government also lowered the national flag to half-mast across the country and at its embassies and consulates abroad.
In Thimphu, a thousand butter lamps were lit at the Tashichhodzong monastery, where the King, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Indian ambassador Sudhakar Dalela, and members of the Royal family participated in the prayers.
“As a mark of respect, all national flags in Bhutan and its missions abroad are flying at half-mast,” the Bhutanese government announced on Friday.
A Legacy of Friendship
On Saturday, King Wangchuck paid tribute to Dr. Singh at his funeral held at the Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi. Dr. Singh, who served as India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away at the age of 92.
During his tenure, Dr. Singh strengthened India’s ties with Bhutan. The two countries share a close relationship based on goodwill, trust, and cooperation.
The 1949 Treaty of Friendship between India and Bhutan, renewed in 2007 under Dr. Singh’s leadership, remains a cornerstone of their bond. His tenure also saw significant collaboration in the hydro-power sector, governed by agreements signed in 2006 and 2009.
Bhutan’s heartfelt tributes underscore Dr. Singh’s enduring impact on India-Bhutan relations and his legacy as a visionary leader.
