Bomb Threat Email Sparks Panic at AMU
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) officials received a threatening email on Thursday evening. The email demanded ₹2 lakh and warned of an explosive device on campus. Multiple university officials, including the vice-chancellor, registrar, and deans, were targeted through unusual email IDs.
The administration immediately alerted Civil Lines police. Security measures were increased, and checks continued late into the night. However, no suspicious items were found during the initial search.
Campus Security on High Alert
Circle Officer Abhay Kumar Pandey confirmed that bomb disposal units, dog squads, and cyber teams were deployed. “We thoroughly searched isolated spots on campus but found nothing suspicious,” he said.
The email also included a UPI address for the ransom. Although police believe it might be a hoax, they are not taking any chances. “AMU is a sensitive location. The Local Intelligence Unit is gathering more information,” Pandey added.
Threat Details Raise Concern
The email, sent from tiwarisrijanyt@protonmail.com, threatened to detonate a bomb if the ransom wasn’t paid within two days. It also mentioned plans to contaminate university food with pork oil.
Proctor Prof Mohd Wasim Ali said the sender seemed familiar with AMU’s hierarchy and email IDs. “The sender’s knowledge of our structure shows it could be someone with insider information,” he stated.
Cyber Teams Investigating
The police forwarded the email and UPI number to the cyber cell for further investigation. Authorities have tightened security at entry points and are closely monitoring campus activity.
“We remain vigilant and continue to strengthen our security network,” Prof Ali assured. The situation remains tense, but officials are working to ensure campus safety.
