A shocking scam has surfaced in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. A brother and sister reportedly married each other, and married couples tied the knot again to exploit government benefits meant for economically weaker sections.
How the Fraud Unfolded
The scam targeted the Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana, which offers Rs 35,000 to the bride’s account, goods worth Rs 10,000, and Rs 6,000 for marriage expenses. During a mass marriage event on December 15, 2023, where 217 couples wed, two already-married couples remarried under the scheme. A case of siblings marrying was also reported.
Local residents exposed the fraud by filing complaints with the authorities. Reports claim a municipal employee orchestrated the fake marriages to siphon funds.
