Congress MP Rakesh Rathore Arrested After Two-Week Manhunt
After a two-week chase, Sitapur police arrested Congress MP Rakesh Rathore on Thursday. He faces charges of rape, criminal intimidation, and issuing threats with a firearm.
Court Sends Rathore to Jail
Sitapur SP Chakresh Mishra confirmed the arrest. The local court sent Rathore to jail under judicial custody until February 11. Investigations are ongoing.
FIR and Legal Proceedings
Police registered an FIR on January 17 under Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) sections 64, 351(3), and 327(2). Rathore allegedly raped a 45-year-old woman after promising marriage and a political career.
He had been hiding in different locations, attempting to secure anticipatory bail. However, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court rejected his petition on Wednesday and ordered him to surrender within two weeks.
Arrest During Press Conference
Police raided his residence at 1:30 PM after learning that he was holding a press conference to defend himself. Authorities arrested him on the spot and took him to City Kotwali police station for further legal procedures.
Bail Rejected, Judicial Inquiry Demanded
On January 23, the Sitapur MP/MLA court also rejected Rathore’s anticipatory bail request.
Earlier, UP Congress chief Ajay Rai demanded a judicial inquiry into the allegations. The case continues to unfold.
