EC Denies Allegations of Voter List Manipulations
The Election Commission of India (ECI) dismissed allegations of arbitrary voter additions and deletions in Maharashtra’s recent assembly elections. Congress had claimed that over 10,000 voters were added in each constituency and accused the EC of unexplained voter deletions.
Congress’ Concerns Over Voter Turnout
Congress raised questions about a sharp increase in voter turnout percentages between 5 PM and the final tally at 11:30 PM on polling day. The party called this spike “inexplicable.”
The EC clarified that comparing 5 PM data with final figures was inaccurate. It explained that the aggregation of voter turnout data is a systematic process, and variations between votes polled and counted were minor and inconsequential.
Assuring Transparency in Election Processes
The EC emphasized that it is impossible to alter actual voter turnout data. It cited the statutory Form 17C, which details voter turnout and is made available to candidate agents at the close of voting.
The poll panel assured that a rule-based process was followed transparently in preparing Maharashtra’s electoral rolls. It found no irregular patterns in voter deletions or additions.
Open Data and Collaboration
Responding to Congress’ demands, the EC stated that all relevant data, including electoral rolls and Form 20 details for each constituency, are publicly available on the CEO Maharashtra website.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and collaboration with political parties. It invited constructive suggestions to further strengthen electoral processes.
The EC urged all parties to rely on its meticulous and participative approach to ensure free and fair elections in the country.
