Rising HMPV Cases in China
Reports of rising HMPV cases in China have caused concern. However, experts have reassured that it is not comparable to the Covid-19 outbreak.
HMPV, or human metapneumovirus, usually causes mild respiratory infections. It spreads through direct contact or by touching contaminated surfaces.
Symptoms and Precautions
HMPV symptoms include cough, fever, and blocked nose. The virus affects vulnerable groups, like young children and the elderly, more severely.
Professor John Tregoning from Imperial College London advised that prevention steps are similar to flu precautions. “Stay in well-ventilated areas, cover your mouth while coughing, and wash your hands frequently,” he said.
Not a New Threat
Experts clarified that HMPV has been around for decades. Most children contract it by the age of five.
Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia said people catch HMPV several times throughout their lives.
China’s Health Measures
China’s health authorities recently discussed respiratory infections. They noted an increase in cases among children but clarified that the overall situation remains under control.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also confirmed that China’s respiratory infection levels are normal for the winter season.
No Need for Alarm
WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris urged people not to panic over this virus. She assured that the current infection rates are expected during the winter months.
