U.S. Surgeon General Calls for Cancer Warning Labels on Alcohol
The U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, issued an advisory on Friday. He recommends that alcoholic drinks carry labels warning about cancer risks. This follows evidence linking alcohol consumption to higher risks of breast, colon, liver, and other cancers.
Murthy also suggests we rethink alcohol consumption guidelines. People need to know about the cancer risks when choosing to drink. This is in addition to existing warnings about birth defects and operating machinery.
“Alcohol consumption is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S.,” Murthy’s office declared. It trails only tobacco and obesity. It raises the risk for at least seven cancer types.
Alcohol leads to 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. That’s more than the number of deaths from alcohol-related traffic accidents, which stands at 13,500.
The statement from Murthy’s office clarified the strong connection. Alcohol consumption increases the risk for seven cancer types. This applies no matter if you drink beer, wine, or spirits. These include cancers of the esophagus, mouth, throat, and voice box
