Kejriwal Seeks Election Commission Action Against BJP’s Parvesh Verma
On Thursday, Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), met senior officials of the Election Commission. He demanded that his rival from the New Delhi assembly constituency, BJP’s Parvesh Verma, be barred from contesting the upcoming Delhi elections. Kejriwal accused Verma of openly distributing money and organizing job camps.
“The BJP candidate in the New Delhi Assembly constituency, Parvesh Verma, is organizing job camps, openly distributing money,” Kejriwal stated after his meeting. He argued that such actions fall under corrupt practices according to the Election Commission’s rules. He further demanded a raid on Verma’s house to uncover any stashed cash.
Kejriwal also reiterated his allegations about the manipulation of voter lists. “In the New Delhi Assembly constituency, from December 15 to January 7, in just 22 days, 5,500 applications were submitted for vote cancellation. These applications are fake,” he said. He added that when officials investigated, people confirmed that fake cancellation requests were made in their names.
Moreover, he accused the local election officer of succumbing to BJP’s influence. “He is facilitating all the wrongdoings of the BJP… The ECI has assured us that they will not allow these practices and will take strict action… The local DEO and ERO should be suspended,” Kejriwal demanded.
His charges include claims that BJP asked its seven MPs in Delhi to create fake votes and tried to delete voters’ names from the electoral rolls earlier this month. However, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar refuted these allegations, emphasizing the robustness of the electoral process and the involvement of political parties in every step.
The Delhi assembly elections are scheduled for a single phase on February 5, with vote counting on February 8
