Governor Bhalla Urges Focus on Public Safety
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has called on the state’s police and paramilitary forces to prioritize the safety and security of residents. He instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure full cooperation from security agencies to maintain peace.
The governor’s directive followed violent protests in Kangpokpi district, where residents stormed a police station, throwing stones to express their anger over the continued presence of central forces.
Security Meeting at Raj Bhavan
On Saturday, Bhalla chaired a high-level security review meeting at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. Officials discussed the overall law and order situation, with a particular focus on securing border areas.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh later shared details of the meeting on social media, highlighting the participation of senior officials from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and Assam Rifles.
Protests Turn Violent in Kangpokpi
Tensions flared in Kangpokpi on Friday evening when protesters demanded the withdrawal of security forces from Uyokching, a border area in the district. The situation escalated, and police resorted to tear gas to disperse the crowd.
During the clashes, Kangpokpi’s Superintendent of Police, M. Prabhakar, sustained injuries.
The unrest coincides with a 24-hour total shutdown and an indefinite economic blockade imposed by Kuki-Zo groups. Protesters are opposing the deployment of central forces in Saibol, a neighboring village of Uyokching.
District Magistrate Orders Strict Monitoring
On Friday, Kangpokpi District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari issued orders to sub-divisional magistrates in the region, instructing them to stay at their headquarters and be available at all times.
The magistrates were directed to monitor the situation closely, coordinate with law enforcement, and ensure the safety of residents.
“It is imperative to maintain a close watch on developments and ensure prompt and effective administrative responses as required,” Chaudhari said.
Shutdown Extended in Kangpokpi
The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) extended the 24-hour total shutdown in Kangpokpi district. The shutdown, which began at 2 am Saturday, was extended to 2 am Sunday.
CoTU demands the removal of all Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) units deployed in Saibol.
As tensions continue, both state and central authorities are working to strengthen coordination and restore peace in the troubled region.
The ongoing unrest highlights the fragile law and order situation in Manipur. Governor Bhalla’s call for stronger security measures is a clear signal that the government is taking the situation seriously. However, with protests and blockades continuing, restoring peace remains a challenge for authorities.
