Atishi’s Eviction Claim Sparks Fresh Controversy
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has claimed that she was evicted from her official residence for the second time in three months. She alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre cancelled her allotment just a night before the Delhi Assembly election dates were announced.
Speaking at a press conference, Atishi said, “They have thrown me out of the Chief Minister’s residence once again. My family’s belongings were thrown on the road. But they cannot stop me from working for the people of Delhi.”
She pledged to continue her welfare programs, including providing Rs 2,100 to women and free healthcare for senior citizens.
PWD Says Eviction Claim False
The Public Works Department (PWD) has refuted Atishi’s eviction claims. According to PWD sources, the question of eviction doesn’t arise as Atishi never took possession of the bungalow at 6, Flag Staff Road.
The AAP leader was supposed to move into the residence within one week of allotment, but three months passed without her doing so, they alleged.
PWD sources accused Atishi of deliberately stalling the process to hinder an ongoing investigation into corruption in the bungalow’s renovation, which has been dubbed ‘Sheeshmahal’ by the BJP.
Why Was the Allotment Cancelled?
The 6, Flag Staff Road residence was previously occupied by former CM Arvind Kejriwal. The bungalow’s renovation cost had allegedly soared to Rs 45 crore from an initial estimate of Rs 7.61 crore.
Sources said that Atishi was required to cooperate with the CBI and ED probes into the renovation expenses. However, by not taking possession, she kept the house closed and inaccessible to investigators.
Alternative Residences Offered to Atishi
PWD sources clarified that Atishi already has an official residence at 17 AB Mathura Road. They also claimed that she has been offered three alternative bungalows but has refused to move in.
The ‘Sheeshmahal’ Scandal: BJP’s Key Poll Issue
In the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly polls on February 5, the ‘Sheeshmahal’ controversy has become a major attack point for the BJP.
The party alleges that AAP misused public funds on luxurious renovations at 6, Flag Staff Road.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have repeatedly targeted the AAP government, accusing them of extravagant spending while projecting a pro-common man image.
AAP’s Response to Allegations
The AAP has dismissed the corruption allegations. The party stated that the bungalow needed a complete overhaul, as it was built in 1942 and was in a dilapidated condition.
The new furnishings and upgrades, they claim, were based on PWD recommendations.
As the Delhi elections approach, the ‘Sheeshmahal’ controversy is expected to remain a hot topic, with both AAP and BJP trying to sway public opinion.
