Traffic moved at a snail’s pace on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway near Ghazipur on Wednesday morning. Security measures tightened for Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s planned visit to Uttar Pradesh’s violence-hit Sambhal district.
Rahul Gandhi Stopped from going Sambhal
Rahul Gandhi’s convoy was halted at the Ghazipur border. Police turned him back as Congress workers gathered in large numbers, worsening traffic conditions. Gandhi expressed frustration, calling it a violation of his constitutional rights. “I am ready to go alone or with the police, but they refuse. This denies my role as Leader of Opposition. Sambhal’s events must be seen. This is a fight for the Constitution,” he said.

Police Stand on the Blockade
ACP Swatantra Kumar Singh clarified the situation. He stated, “Our orders are to maintain security. Further instructions will be followed as received.”
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS are in force in Sambhal, banning outsider entry. These restrictions were extended until December 31. Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia directed police in nearby districts to stop Gandhi, citing communal sensitivity.
Background of Sambhal Violence
Violence broke out in Sambhal on November 24 during a survey of a Mughal-era mosque. The court-ordered survey followed claims of a temple at the site. Clashes left four dead and many injured. Gandhi planned to meet victims’ families before returning to Delhi.

Congress’ Push for Access
The Congress delegation, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, sought entry into Sambhal. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai insisted, “We will request that at least four members be allowed, including Rahul ji and Priyanka ji.”
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions in Sambhal and raises concerns about constitutional rights and governance amid political unrest.
