Court Fines Rahul Gandhi for Missing Savarkar Defamation Case Hearing
A local court has imposed a Rs 200 fine on Rahul Gandhi for skipping a hearing in the 2022 defamation case related to his remarks on freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The court directed that the amount be paid to the complainant’s lawyer.
Gandhi’s Absence and Court’s Response
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma had earlier ordered Gandhi to appear in court on Wednesday. However, his legal team submitted an application seeking exemption, citing his official engagements, including meetings with foreign dignitaries.
The court acknowledged the request but imposed a fine, setting the next hearing for April 14.
Background of the Case
The defamation case dates back to November 17, 2022, when Gandhi, during his Bharat Jodo Yatra rally in Maharashtra’s Akola district, allegedly made derogatory remarks about Savarkar.
Advocate Nripendra Pandey later filed a complaint, accusing Gandhi of deliberately insulting the freedom fighter. The complainant also alleged that the remarks were part of a larger conspiracy to defame Savarkar and gained widespread media attention.
With the next hearing set, all eyes will be on how the case unfolds in the coming weeks.
