Shashi Tharoor Slams Nitesh Rane’s Communal Remark
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has expressed outrage over BJP MLA Nitesh Rane’s controversial remark linking “EVM” to a religious community. Calling it “shocking,” Tharoor stressed that targeting any particular group or community is against India’s core values.
Speaking to ANI, Shashi Tharoor highlighted the importance of equality in a diverse nation. “In our country, we must understand a fundamental lesson from the freedom struggle. When a group of people decided religion should define their nationhood, they formed Pakistan. India, however, chose a different path,” he said.
He further added, “We are all equal citizens of India. That’s the foundation of our progress. Picking on any community or caste is wrong.”
What Did Nitesh Rane Say?
Nitesh Rane sparked controversy during a recent Hindu Garjana Sabha in Sangli. In his speech, he allegedly said that “EVM means, Every Vote against Mullah.”
This statement comes after Rane previously referred to Kerala as a “mini-Pakistan”, a remark that drew widespread criticism. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called the statement “deeply provocative and deplorable.”
Rane’s comments have led to a backlash, with political leaders across the spectrum demanding action against him.
Brinda Karat Demands Arrest
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat also condemned Rane’s remarks, calling it hate speech. She demanded that Rane be arrested for his repeated communal statements.
“This man is a threat to India. His hate speech undermines the Constitution,” Karat said. She criticized the BJP for its inaction and accused the ruling party of promoting divisive politics.
Karat further stated, “The Prime Minister talks about the Constitution, yet a minister from his party is destroying its foundation with hate speech. Nitesh Rane must be removed from his post immediately.”
A Pattern of Controversies
This isn’t the first time Nitesh Rane has found himself in hot water over communal remarks. He was booked last year for delivering hate speeches against Muslims, raising concerns about the rising trend of divisive politics.
The controversy surrounding Rane’s statements has reignited debates on communalism and hate speech in Indian politics.
As political leaders and activists continue to call for accountability, the pressure on the BJP to take action against Rane is mounting.
