Tiger Killed in Dudhwa Tiger Reserve After Being Hit by Speeding Car
A seven-year-old tiger was killed early Wednesday morning after a speeding car ran over it near Rajnarayanpur railway crossing on Pallia-Mailani road, inside the Mailani range of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve.
Deputy Director Rengaraju T confirmed that the tiger died on the spot due to the impact.
Driver Arrested, Vehicle Seized
The driver, Laxman Saud from Delhi, was identified and arrested. He was booked under Section 9/51 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, which carries a minimum three-year jail term for such offenses. The authorities also impounded the vehicle involved in the accident.
Field Director H Rajamohan stated that Saud admitted to driving over the speed limit while returning after dropping a passenger in Gaurifanta. The speed limit inside the reserve is 30 km per hour, but he violated the restriction.
Authorities Reinforce Speed Limit Measures
After the accident, patrolling staff immediately responded and arrested the driver. They also recovered the tiger’s carcass.
This is the second such incident in the area in recent months. On December 20, 2024, a leopardess was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle.
The Gaurifanta-Pallia-Bhira-Mailani highway, which passes through the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, sees heavy traffic to Bareilly and Delhi. As the road runs alongside protected forest areas, wild animals frequently cross, increasing the risk of road accidents.
To address this issue, Dudhwa authorities have installed barriers and warning signs at key locations, reminding drivers to adhere to speed limits to protect wildlife.
