Supreme Court Rejects HD Kumaraswamy’s Petition in Corruption Case
The Supreme Court has dismissed Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s petition seeking the cancellation of proceedings in a corruption case against him. The Karnataka High Court had previously rejected his request, and the apex court upheld the decision.
A bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Rajesh Bindal refused to entertain the petition, which challenged a four-year-old Karnataka High Court order.
Allegations Against Kumaraswamy
The case involves the de-notification of two land plots in Halagevaderahalli Village, Uttarahalli Hobli, Bengaluru South Taluk during Kumaraswamy’s tenure as Karnataka Chief Minister.
- The complaint alleges that Kumaraswamy ordered the de-notification of the land in 2007, despite objections from the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).
- The land was later sold to private parties for ₹4.14 crore in 2010, raising concerns of financial misconduct.
Kumaraswamy’s Legal Argument
Kumaraswamy’s counsel argued that under recent amendments to the Prevention of Corruption Act, a sanction for prosecution was required. Since no such approval was taken, he claimed that the trial proceedings should be dropped.
However, both the High Court and the Supreme Court rejected this argument, allowing the case to proceed.
With this ruling, Kumaraswamy continues to face corruption charges, keeping the legal battle open.
