Yogi Adityanath Criticizes Congress Over Ambedkar Legacy
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a strong attack on the Congress, accusing it of repeatedly disrespecting B.R. Ambedkar during his lifetime and undermining his legacy after his death. He also alleged that India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, opposed Ambedkar’s inclusion in the Drafting Committee of the Constitution.
Speaking at a press conference at his official residence, the CM addressed the ongoing controversy sparked by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha.
BJP’s Efforts to Honor Ambedkar
Yogi Adityanath highlighted the BJP’s consistent efforts to honor Ambedkar’s contributions. He mentioned memorials established in places tied to Ambedkar’s life, such as Mhow, Nagpur, Mumbai, and London.
“Under leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi, the BJP has worked tirelessly to uphold Ambedkar’s ideals and honor his legacy,” he stated.
Accusations Against Congress
The CM accused Congress of sidelining Ambedkar’s contributions:
- Constituent Assembly Exclusion: Alleged reluctance to include Ambedkar, with Gandhi’s intervention ensuring his position.
- Election Defeats: Congress allegedly worked to defeat Ambedkar in the 1952 general elections and 1954 by-elections.
- Textbook Controversy: A derogatory cartoon of Ambedkar during the UPA regime led to protests and an apology from then HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.
- Lack of National Honors: Ambedkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna only under a government supported by the BJP.
SP Also Targeted
Adityanath also accused the Samajwadi Party (SP) of similar disrespect toward Dalits. He cited instances where the SP government allegedly attempted to demolish Ambedkar memorials and removed his name from institutions in Kannauj and Saharanpur.
Defending Amit Shah
Defending Amit Shah, Adityanath criticized Congress and SP for misrepresenting Shah’s statements. He accused them of creating division and failing to address their historical misdeeds.
Call for Apology
The CM called on Congress and SP to apologize to the nation for fostering what he described as “divisive politics” and disrespecting Dalits and marginalized communities.
