Violence Erupts Over Mosque Survey in Sambhal
Internet services were suspended, and schools shut down in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, after violence claimed four lives during a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid on Sunday. The court-ordered survey of the Mughal-era mosque, which is embroiled in a legal dispute over claims that it was built on a Hindu temple site, triggered clashes between locals and the police.
Protest Turns Violent
The situation spiraled out of control when protesters clashed with the police. Demonstrators set vehicles ablaze and hurled stones. In response, the police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. At least 20 police personnel sustained injuries, with one constable in critical condition due to a head injury.

Authorities detained 21 individuals, including two women, and launched an investigation. Officials stated that those involved in the violence would face charges under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).
Victims and Damage
District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya confirmed that two victims had died from bullet wounds inflicted by country-made pistols. The cause of the third death remains unknown, pending a post-mortem examination. Charred vehicles, footwear, and brickbats littered the streets, showcasing the extent of the unrest.
Security Measures in Place
To maintain order, internet services in Sambhal were suspended for 24 hours, and all schools up to Class 12 were closed on November 25. Authorities have restricted entry to Sambhal for outsiders, social organizations, and public representatives until November 30.
The Mosque Survey Dispute
The Shahi Jama Masjid has been at the center of tensions since a local court ordered a survey last Tuesday. The survey followed a petition claiming that the mosque was constructed over a Harihar temple demolished by Mughal Emperor Babur in 1529.
While officials attempted the survey earlier, it was postponed to Sunday to avoid interference with prayers. Despite the violence, authorities completed the survey with videography and photography, adhering to court directives. The survey report will be submitted by November 29.
Political Reactions
The Samajwadi Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav, called for the Supreme Court to address the “conspiracy to spread tension” in the name of surveys. He accused the Uttar Pradesh government of failing to maintain peace. Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Rai echoed these sentiments, blaming the Yogi Adityanath-led government for rising violence.
Meanwhile, the BJP defended the judicial process. Party spokesperson Nalin Kohli emphasized that legal recourse is available for those who disagree with court orders, stating that “nobody has the right to break the law.”
Historical Context and Legal Implications
Advocates Vishnu Shankar Jain and Hari Shankar Jain, who have represented the Hindu side in similar disputes, argued that the survey was necessary to uncover historical truths. Critics, however, view the move as a provocation that violates the sanctity of religious places under the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
As tensions continue in Sambhal, the incident highlights the fragile balance between historical claims, religious sensitivities, and law enforcement. Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
